An office the scheme never described

The nine orders were sorted by what angels do in relation to God: contemplate, govern, carry messages. None of those offices covers standing beside a corpse. Yet six titles in this catalogue put angels with a dead Christ, which is more than the fall of the rebel host, at four, and close to the Annunciation, at seven. The tradition kept assigning angels a job its own hierarchy had no word for.

Plural, uncounted, unnamed

The title says angels and stops. No number, no name, no rank. That is the default state of the angel in Western painting, and this catalogue records it repeatedly: of 224 entries, sixteen name an archangel and none names an order below that level. Every other angel here is what this title gives — a plural noun, present because the composition and the devotion both required somebody to be there.
