The angel as a way out
The office named in this title is deliverance. An angel opens a prison and a man walks out of it; the figure has no name in the title and needs none, because the function is complete in itself. In the ranked scheme the tradition inherited, this is the work of the lowest order — the rank whose business is direct contact with human beings — and it produced far more paintings than the exalted ranks above it ever did.
What the record holds
The catalogue dates the work to 1639 and gives Jusepe de Ribera, a Spanish painter, with the single style term Tenebrism. It measures 232 x 177 cm, which is altarpiece scale, and the measured colour family is brown. The recorded location is the Museo del Prado in Madrid.
Why the style term matters here
Tenebrism names a method rather than a period: a picture built almost entirely out of darkness, with light admitted narrowly and used to select what the eye is allowed to find. A prison scene is the natural home of that method, since the subject already supplies the darkness and the release already supplies a reason for light to enter. The record gives no second style term, which means the entry rests on that method alone.
